Webcomic Preview Review - Afraid of Heights

A WEBCOMIC BY STEFAN GAULIN

Here is the synopsis for this fascinating webcomic work: Santa Monica, 1987. Discovering an enigmatic alien doll stuffed with drugs and cash at the beach, a young boy's life is suddenly and irrevocably changed forever.

Here is the cover.

The synopsis is compelling enough. But it gets better.

Afraid of Heights is a comic-book adaptation of the WAVVES indie rock album of the same name, released in 2013. Each of the album’s thirteen tracks is represented by a separate chapter, all of which tell an ongoing story. There is no dialogue, only imagery, as the comic is intended to be read with the album playing in the background.

OK, so let's try this shall we? Here is the music video of the first track (which is interesting on it's own) but the comic makes it that much better. Try hitting play and follow the instructions on the webcomic pages below.

See how this works? This is only the first part of issue one, but we think the style of music and style of this webcomic really fit. We also really love how the religious overtones are carried through both the music video and comic.

A Webcomic with Multiple Meanings

What's makes this more interesting is looking at the lyrics of the first song. Here they are:

Sail to the Sun - Wavves

I don't wanna, get left behind
So I tell you what I'm gonna do to get by
I'm gonna pick you up in my arms, give you all of my love
Soon we'll never find mine
First we gotta get high

And sail to the sun, chances are none
Oh, but we'll all die, that's just the way we live
Uhu, uhu, uhu, uhu, uhu, uhu

I don't wanna, get left behind
So I tell you what I'm gonna do to get by
I'm gonna pick you up in my arms, give you all of my love
Soon we'll never find mine
First we gotta get high

And sail to the sun, chances are none
Oh, but we'll all die, that's just the way we live
In a grave, in a grave, in a grave
In a grave, in a grave

In a grave, in a grave, in a grave
In a grave, in a grave, in a grave
Uhu, uhu, uhu, uhu, uhu, uhu

Now here is how the first episode ends (spoiler alert) and really demonstrates how the song enhances the webcomic and vice versa.
